A group of our Post 16 girls are currently carrying out a work experience placement at the Little Haven Hotel in South Shields.

The girls have learnt some valuable life skills such as cleaning, making beds, hoovering and setting tables.

Every week the girls put in 100% effort.

Today Blue 2 students have had a great treat because of the hard work of 3
students in class. Martin, Luke and Ramizul developed 12 life skills while planning
an organising several events for their friends. Today their project was to go bowling
and have lunch out together thanks to a charity called The Key. Science and maths
skills were also developed while out in our community: comparing physical
processes in our community, identifying sounds, developing our time skills in a functional  way.

Dear Parents/Carers

Blue 1’s topic this half term is ‘Community’. We have spent time discussing ways in which we can help our local community and local charities. We would like to raise some awareness and some money for ‘Hebburn Helps’. This is a Community Food Bank and Crisis Response Team are a Voluntary Community Organisation that was set up to help local families who are finding it hard and are struggling.

We have researched online, and spoken to Hebburn Helps, and they are currently running the following appeals,

• Chocolate amnesty – an old chocolate left from Christmas could be donated to make Easter treats
• Easter Egg appeal – any donated Easter Eggs will be given to children in the local community who live in South Tyneside and the surrounding areas.
• Most wanted food – they are running low on tinned custard, tinned fruit and tinned rice pudding and any other non-perishable food with a good sell by date.
• Unwanted gifts – any gifts that you have in your home that could be given to use as raffle and tombola prizes.

It would be great if you could donate anything from the list above, even just one item! Blue 1 will make sure these are collected and then taken to Hebburn Helps. If they could be in school by Friday 22^nd March 2019 we would be grateful, as we intend to take them to Hebburn Helps the following week.

Also, as a class we are hoping to raise some money in school via the café and the school fayres, as well as ask staff for donations and support.

As part of World Bool week each class chose their favourite story and made a book in a box.

As part of our school council, three students were chosen to represent our school at the Young People’s Parliament.  As participants they were asked to take part in a Body Image Campaign, discussing how body image influenced people’s perception of us.  All of our students were able to share their views and were able to give examples of how the media, social media and friends and family influenced their views.

Keelman’s Way School have recently been awarded the National Standard for commitment to continuing progress and development in enterprise education.

This is all down to the fantastic hard work of our talented pupils and staff. Post 16 in particular have planned, designed and made some fabulous items to sell to raise money for school.

Pupils have used a range of tools and equipment to produce high quality gifts. Items include wooden planters, hand painted ceramic pots, garlands, wooden reindeers, candle holders and jewellery.

To get this award school carried out a full audit to show all enterprise activities in school. A portfolio of evidence was created with examples of what we have created in school, along with an action plan reflecting our ideas for future developments within Keelman’s Way.

Well done to all involved.

As part of our topic of Water Everywhere, Yellow class went on the metro into South Shields and looked at the Tyne.  They tried to find as many features of a river as possible.
